Julian Damashek, PhD
Water Quality Scientist
Julian Damashek is an aquatic ecologist with expertise in biogeochemistry, microbial ecology, bioinformatics, and biostatistics. His research background is primarily studying nitrogen cycling and microbial communities in freshwater, estuarine, and marine ecosystems, using a combination of fieldwork, laboratory experiments, and large-scale computational analyses of environmental genomic data. At heart, he is passionate about all things related to water, microbes, or ecosystems.
Before joining Riverkeeper, Julian taught and led undergraduate research labs at Hamilton College and Utica University. He earned a B.A. from Amherst College, Ph.D. from Stanford University, and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Georgia. Julian also enjoys playing and listening to folk music, baking sourdough bagels and bread, and spending time with his partner Kendahl, their four children, and their lively group of guinea pigs.
